Yumbulakang is the first royal palace in tibet , built 2000 years ago for the mythical king Nyatri Tsenpo.
here are two explanations for the meaning of the name Yumbulakang.First "Yumbu" means Mother and son and "Lakang" means palace .
Therfore, it is "the palace of mother and son." Secondly , the montain of Yumbulakang looks like a female deer , so the name means "the palace on the leg of a female deer."
Buddhism first came to the Yarlung valley during the time of Lhato Thori Nyantsen .
Legend tells that a scripture , a golden stupa , and a sacred object descended from heaven onto the roof of the Yumbulakang . since there was no written language at the time , no one could read the words on the scripture ; but Lhato Thori Nyantsen kept the items in his temple .
Five generations later the scripture was finally translated .Allegedly , because of the power of the scripture , Lhato Thori Nyantsen lived to be 120 years old .
As the legend is about the very beginning of Buddhism in tibet , this palace is regarded a sared place.
