Tradrug Temple

Tradrug is one of the very first Buddhist temple in tibet and is located around 7 km south of the Tsetang Hotel .

It was founded at the same time as the Jokhang and Ramoche temples in Lhasa , around the seventh century during the reign of songtsn ogress.King SongtsenGampo`s Han-Chinese wife , princess Wencheng , divined the presence of a subterranean demoness in Tibet , and it was believed that pinning the ogress would allow the Buddhist`s faith to take root .

The location of Tradrug Temple correponds with the demoness `left shoulder . There are 12 such subduing temples surrounding the Jokhang temple in concentric circles like a mandala. Tradrug literally means "Sparrow-hawk"and Dragon." legend tells that the site where Tradrug is situated was originally a lake which was continually being disturbed by a dragon . King Songtsen Gampo transformed himself into a Sparrow-hawk , defeated the dragon and built a temple on the lake . Though the temple is small , it holds great signifiane.

Tradrug has had numerous enlargements and reconstructions over the centuries . It was significantly enlarged in the fourteenth century and again under the rule of the 5th and the 7th Dalai Lama . It was badly desecrated in the second -half of the last century , but extensive restoration has been carried out since 1988 . the building to the rear of the courtyard shares a similar ground plan as the Jokhang temple in Lhasa, and has the same Tibetan name:Tsuglakhang .

Most of Tradrug`s valuable statues and murals were damaged and have been replaced by new images . The main treasures in the Tradrug Temple today are three valuable thangkas : one is made of 29.900 pearls ;the second is a thangkha of Shakyamuni Buddha; and third is a Japanese style thangka. All three thangkas have a long history and providde the brilliant legends we have today .
